Duke of Edinburgh
Challenge yourself. Discover your strengths. Make memories that last a lifetime.
At Plymstock School, we are proud to offer the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – a life-changing adventure that builds confidence, independence and resilience in young people.
Whether you're hiking across Dartmoor with a rucksack full of snacks and ambition, or volunteering in your community to make a real difference, the DofE is about stepping outside your comfort zone and discovering what you're capable of.
What is the DofE?
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a nationally recognised programme of personal development. Open to all students in Year 9 and above, it’s split into three levels – Bronze, Silver, and Gold – each one more challenging than the last.
Each level has four key sections:
- Volunteering – Make a positive difference in your community.
- Physical – Get active and improve your fitness.
- Skills – Learn something new or develop a talent.
- Expedition – Plan, train for and complete a journey in the great outdoors.
Gold participants also complete a residential – an unforgettable shared experience with people you’ve never met before.
Why take part?
The DofE is more than just an award – it’s a journey of self-discovery. Students who complete the programme grow in:
- Confidence and leadership
- Teamwork and communication
- Perseverance and problem-solving
Plus, it looks fantastic on your CV, job applications, and university statements!
The DofE at Plymstock School
At Plymstock, the DofE is a key part of our commitment to developing well-rounded, ambitious, and socially responsible young people. Our dedicated team of staff support every step of the journey – from expedition training to skill selection.
Each year, dozens of students set out on their first hike, cook their first camp meal, and take their first step toward something truly incredible.
How to get involved
We launch the Bronze Award in Year 9, with opportunities for Silver and Gold as students move up the school. There are launch assemblies for year 8 students, each year, in the summer term and students can register through the DofE manager.
"The DofE has given me so much confidence; the expeditions were such a fun challenge!"
