The Final 4 (Countdown to GCSEs)

4 Weeks to Go – The Power of Marginal Gains

This week’s Countdown Assembly focused on the powerful idea of marginal gains — the belief that small, consistent improvements can lead to significant overall success.

Students explored the example of the Great Britain Cycling Team under Sir Dave Brailsford, who transformed performance by making many tiny improvements across all areas, from equipment and training to sleep and recovery. Individually, these changes were small — but together, they led to extraordinary results.

We applied this idea directly to Maths. Improving a grade doesn’t come from suddenly understanding everything; it comes from getting slightly better across multiple topics. A few extra marks on fractions, algebra, graphs or ratios can quickly add up and make a real difference.

The key message for students was the importance of forensic understanding of their performance. The most successful students carefully analyse where they lose marks and target those areas. Tools like Question Level Analysis (QLA) and SPARX Fix-Up are essential in this process, helping students identify gaps, focus their revision, and make meaningful gains.

By using their QLA, completing SPARX Fix-Up, and turning weaknesses into strengths, students can make those crucial marginal gains that lead to improved outcomes.

Students can also use SPARX codes to practise specific topics linked to their areas of weakness, with guidance available below on how to do this effectively.
