Plymstock School’s Sixth Form caters for students of all abilities who are keen to develop their learning and there is an expectation that all students will extend their education at the school. The sixth form block offers spacious, well equipped and well-furnished accommodation which includes a superb ICT suite and new careers library.
Plymstock’s popular Sixth Form attracts students from other schools and has an excellent record of academic achievement, consistently placing the school high up in the official league tables and surveys. Plymstock’s 350+ students are able to study a wide-ranging programme. In addition to 30+ highly successful Advanced Level courses students can have access to Levels 1, 2 and 3 work related courses and other programmes through the Tamar Valley consortium (TVC). This co-ordinates training courses across Plymouth, and is supported by the Training and Enterprise Council. This unique development has attracted national attention and provides unrivalled opportunity for our students. We also have close and productive links with neighbouring secondary schools through the Plym Consortium. This widens further the choice available for our students.
Students broaden their education and skills development through other opportunities which include further GCSE’s, leadership qualifications at levels 1, 2 and 3, Leisure Activities, Young Enterprise, Community Service and work experience in the UK or Europe. Students also receive a comprehensive programme of Careers and Higher Education guidance.
The Sixth Form
“The Sixth Form is led with energy and purpose”
Ofsted 2009
The Plymstock Sixth Form plays an important role in setting high standards of work and attitude. Students provide an excellent example to younger members of the school. Staff and students nominate the Head Boy, Head Girl, and their deputies. Sixth Formers also assume responsibility on the school council, and in assisting in the school and local community. They also have a measure of control over their own affairs through the Senate – an elected forum of Sixth Form students. The Senate meets on a weekly basis and is responsible for organising social events, fund raising activities, sports activities and representing students’ views to the Head of Sixth Form.
A high proportion of Plymstock students gain University places, and the school has a long record of success at entry to Oxford and Cambridge. Others are highly valued recruits to local business, industry and commerce.
“The Financial Times places Plymstock School in the top 500 Sixth Forms for quality and achievement”
