Plymstock School ICT Department

Our ICT department has a vast amount of computer equipment available for all pupils to access. There are four fully equipped computer suites with modern PCs with flat screen monitors, laser printers, digital projectors and interactive whiteboards. There are additional computer suites in English, Maths, Science, Languages, Technology and class sets of laptops in Science and Business Studies.

At present the ICT department consists of four members of specialist ICT teachers with many years of secondary experience between them.

The aims of the ICT department are to:

  • develop the students ICT capabilityóin essence the ability to find, process, present and communicate information
  • Encourage students to reflect on their use of ICT and identify how they could use it better next time
  • Enable students to see how ICT is used in everyday life and identify the benefits and limitations this has
  • Enable students to use computers and computer networks, including the Internet, safely and efficiently
  • To prepare students for public examinations in ICT

The course provided during Key Stage 3 consists of:

One hour of taught ICT per week for years 7, 8 and 9 which covers skills in areas such as:

  • Researching information on WWW
  • Processing data in local databases or spreadsheet models
  • Communicating information through printed documents, digital presentations and websites
  • Creating graphic images, animations and computer games
  • Editing of video and audio clips to create movies and podcasts

In Key Stage 4 we offer two courses:

  • GCSE Full course using AQA 2010 specification and this course can be taken as a daytime option or as a twilight course
  • OCR Nationals Level 2 in ICT – this course offers a much wider range of study and allows students to gain the equivalent of up to 4 full GCSEs
