We have now returned after the Christmas break and are looking forward to what 2013 will bring.

Last term was a busy one and ended with some great events including the GCSE and Post 16 Presentation Evenings and the Christmas Concert.

GCSE Presentation- Our very successful Year 11 of 2012 returned to receive their certificates and awards at their celebration event. Our guest speaker was ex-student and ‘The Voice’ star Vince Freeman who inspired and entertained us with his singing.

Post 16 Presentation- Due to our later in the month scheduling we welcomed back more of our students than ever. We celebrated successes and were motivated by our guest speaker Thom Hunt one of River Cottage’s ‘Three Hungry Boys’.

Christmas Concert- As usual this was at our local church and a record number of parents and members of the community joined us to celebrate the Christmas season.

SNOW!

With the forecast including colder weather over the next few weeks I would like to remind parents that Plymstock School will be open as usual unless weather conditions make it impossible for sufficient staff to make it to school. In the unlikely event that I need to close the school we will post information on this website. You will also be able to get information by listening to reports on Heart FM (97.0 FM) or Radio Devon (103.4 FM).

Welcome to Book Bound! This is the place where you are free to recommend, rave, or rant about books you are currently reading. Whether you are a parent, student or member of staff you can have five minutes of fame here!

We all know that Literacy is the key to success at school as all of our subjects require us to read and process information. In a recent BBC article it was suggested that students need to read, and understand what they read, for between 19 and 24 minutes a day in order for their skills to progress. “If they are reading and understanding for less than three minutes a day, they regress.” That means your skills will get worse! (Read the full article here)

Fortunately, we have shelves full of exciting books to make this FUN!

The purpose of the Book Bound reading blog is primarily for fun. However, it will also contribute to our efforts to improve Literacy. Its aim is to encourage reading, and conversations about reading, among staff, students and parents.

We were delighted to host the Royal Geographical Society’s lecture on 15th November. Over 60 people from the city and the surrounding area listened to Associate Professor Stewart Barr from Exeter University. Stewart’s talk was on how we can build great places to live in that are sustainable in a world of global warming and declining oil supplies. Most of the audience were 6th formers and they enjoyed Stewart’s excellent story-telling, his involvement of the audience in the topic and the way he made us decide what we wanted for the future. Many thanks to Plymstock’s 6th form Geographers for not only attending but also serving refreshments to our guests.
